In this general election year, Kingston Readers' Festival features two local politicians - Vince Cable, Liberal Democrat MP for Twickenham, and Zac Goldsmith, Conservative Party Parliamentary candidate for Richmond Park - both of whom have also written books. Not to be outdone, the Labour Party will be represented once again by former deputy leader Roy Hattersley, who will be entertaining us with his series of essays, In Search of England.
History is excitingly represented once more by best-selling author Alison Weir and philosophy by Robert Rowland Smith. War is covered by Sadie Jones,Dame Joan Bakewell (in her first novel), and by Voices in Performance who use narrative, voices, poetry, music and sound effects to examine attitudes to war throughout history.
Kingston University academics do us proud, as ever, with their seminars on topics as diverse as suburban utopias and American Quakers. Cookery is covered by Yasmin Alibhai-Brown in her food memoir, The Settler's Cookbook, while poetry is ably represented by Chrissie Gittins and Kingston University's Todd Swift. And last, but by no means least, Jacqueline Wilson is back, ready to enthral children with her latest book, Little Darlings.
Despite our fears that we would have to reduce the number of events after the sad demise of one of our sponsors, Borders UK, we still seem to have something for everyone! Happy reading.
