The Rose Theatre is a 900-seat venue located in the London Borough of Kingston Upon Thames. The astonishing circular auditorium is modelled on the original Elizabethan Rose Theatre, situated on London's Bankside. Its unique design incorporates a pit area where audience can sit on cushions for only £8.
The Rose opened in January 2008 and under the leadership of Stephen Unwin, Artistic Director has successfully staged eight home-grown productions, from Miss Julie to The Winslow Boy, Bedroom Farce to A Midsummer Night's Dream. A wide range of distinguished actors have appeared at the Rose including Jane Asher Peter Bowles, Judi Dench and Timothy West. This autumn, the Rose will produce Hay Fever with Celia Imrie and present a new musical of The Three Musketeers.
Central to the dream is that the Rose should continue to produce its own productions all year round. The varied repertoire consists of classical revivals, neglected modern masterpieces, new translations of foreign plays and occasional world premieres. All of these are presented with a robust commitment to language and story telling, but, above all, with a direct and intimate connection with the audience. The Rose is supported by Royal Borough of Kingston and Kingston University. However, it receives no funding from Arts Council England.
The Rose also presents a number of visiting productions plus a host of one-night shows. The Culture Café provides free events throughout the week.
The Rose is committed to providing a wide range of participation and learning activities including a reading group for verse lovers, youth theatre groups and education workshops. The Rose currently enjoys strong educational links with Kingston University, providing resources for their performing arts courses.
