Spoken Word Project

The Rose is committed to excellence in everything we do. In addition to putting on a wide range of productions that appeal to as many sectors of the community as possible, we believe in providing beneficial development opportunities for schools and businesses.

Why do we need the Spoken Word Programme?
The UK is currently experiencing a ‘crisis of communication skills' that the government, schools and business find hard to address. Teachers cite high levels of inarticulacy among their students; business leaders are concerned by their employees' failure to argue effectively or present in a confident and clear manner.

How does the Spoken Word Programme work?
The Rose is working in partnership with the Institute for the Spoken Word, Kingston University and Royal Borough of Kingston Council to tackle this crisis of communication skills by establishing a national quality standard for oracy. We deliver bespoke workshops and training courses which examine how spoken word skills develop self-confidence and self-esteem in children and chief executives alike.

What are the Spoken Word workshops?
The workshops focus on speech but also incorporate listening skills, team awareness, creative thinking and social interaction. The programmes are designed for all age groups and backgrounds. A package of seven different programmes has been created to meet the needs of specific target groups from 6 - 60 year olds. They have the same principles but are designed to meet the specific needs of each target audience.

The programmes are:
- Primary Schools
- Secondary Schools
- Sixth Form Diploma
- University Students
- The Skills Agenda for Unemployed Adults
- Spoken Word for Managers
- Creative Leadership

Education Workshops
The primary and secondary school workshops involve classes of 30 children at the Rose for four half-day workshops. The children use our stage and rehearsal rooms to learn presence, vocal skills and speech techniques. Teachers are given additional material to practice in their classrooms between the four workshops. The specially-designed content relates directly to the primary and national curriculum requirements. Programmes for older students also relate to communication based qualifications.

Business Workshops
The other three programmes focus on skills for business. The Skills Agenda workshop helps unemployed adults back into work. The Spoken Word for Managers and Creative Leadership programmes help public and private sector leaders innovate and drive creativity to survive and thrive in the current economic climate. Each course is led by expert tutors with support from professionals from within the performing arts.
