The UK is home to some of the most prestigious drama schools in the world, so it’s hardly a surprise that more than one thousand applicants audition for each place. The Rose Academy is a unique and very special course that draws on the expertise of leading drama school facilitators, directors and actors to offer an insight into conservatoire training and techniques to maximise your chances of getting a place on the course you want. We have been running this course for six years, with a great hit rate at schools like RADA, LAMDA, Guildhall, Central, Oxford and East15. Participation on the Academy is by audition only. Email [email protected] to organise an interview.
Cost: £200. Classes: Monday evenings 7pm-9.30pm.
Next term: Mon 24 Sep - Mon 10 Dec
Rose Players is our introductory acting group open for anyone aged over 18. We welcome actors of all ages and experience to take part in classes that focus on professional-process and technique.
Perhaps you’ve never acted before, or perhaps you are returning to it. All you need is enthusiasm and to be able to commit to the classes over the course of the term. We explore major practitioners, methods of working on different styles of text, improvisation and vocal techniques that are applicable to many different areas of life.
The course is directed by Anthony Hoskyns, an experienced acting tutor and veteran of the Rose education programme. When appropriate, guest directors may also work with you on specialist skills and there will be an informal showing of your work at the end of term.
Whether you are thinking about professional training or you're an enthusiastic amateur, this is a great way to spend your Monday evenings.
Cost: £250. Classes: Tuesday evenings 7pm-9.30pm.
Next term dates: Tue 18 Sep - Tue 11 Dec
Our popular playwriting course is run by the brilliant playwright and dramaturg Stephen Brown, whose plays include Occupational Hazards (Hampstead Theatre), Faster (Filter Theatre at BAC and 59E59 New York), Does My Society Look Big in This? (Bristol Old Vic) and Future Me (Theatre503 and Public Theatre New York). Stephen has been a core teacher at the Rose for eight years and many of his students have gone on to work as professional playwrights.
Over twelve weeks you will be taken through every step of writing a play, from character development and structure, to its professional application. In a small group you will analyse classic and modern works, as well as taking part in creative writing exercises and receiving individual feedback on your work. At the end of term, we invite experienced theatre directors and a group of actors to workshop scenes from your plays, giving you a unique opportunity to see how new writing is approached by professionals in the rehearsal room.
Whether you write as part of your job, or just fancy putting pen to paper for the first time, whether you end up with a fully polished play, or a score of ideas, this is a really enjoyable and focused springboard for your creativity.
