Mark’s many theatre and musical credits for regional companies include productions at Manchester Royal Exchange, Nottingham Playhouse, the RSC, The Edinburgh Festival, Chichester Festival where he was an associate artist (2006-2008), the National Theatre where he was head of lighting from 1993-2003, and on the West End including Blithe Spirit which also played in the USA and Canada. In New York he received a Drama Desk nomination for ‘Outstanding Lighting Design’ for Prometheus Bound.
Opera designs include: Jenufa and Pelléas et Mélisande (Royal Swedish Opera); Dead Man Walking (Royal Danish Opera); Vanessa and Madama Butterfly (Glyndebourne); Il Turco in Italia, Semele, Il Nozze di Figaro, (Garsington), La Cenerentola, I Puritani, Jenufa and Don Quichotte (Danish National Opera); Il Nozze di Figaro, The Mikado, Orfeo ed Eurydice, Magic Flute, Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Don Giovanni and La Traviata (Scottish Opera); I Puritani, Lulu and Pelléas et Mélisande (Welsh National Opera); with many productions in Austria, Belgium, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Kuwait, Spain, South Africa, and the USA. He was nominated for the Knight of Illumination Award for outstanding lighting on Lulu at Welsh National Opera and was a finalist in World Stage Design 2013. In 2014 he was awarded an honorary fellowship by the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
His many dance credits include designs for The Royal Ballet, Birmingham Royal Ballet, ABT, National Ballet of Japan, Northern Ballet, Scottish Ballet, LCB, Berlin, Houston, Stuttgart and Toulouse.
